Councilman Robert Farrell
Robert Farrell is a resident at the California African American Political and Economic Institute, located at California State University, Dominguez Hills. He obtained a certificate in community college teaching at the university, and is an instructor of business law and constitutional law at West Los Angeles College. A counselor with the Grumpy Old Men land use/entitlements organization, he served as consultant to Assemblyman Mervyn Dymally (D-52) and advisor to Bishop L. Daniel Williams, president of the Baptist Ministers Conference of Los Angeles. He resides in San Pedro with his wife, singer Windy Barnes Farrell.
He was 8th District representative on the 15 member Los Angeles City Council, the governing body of the second largest municipal corporation in the United States, from 1974-91.
His civic activities include positions as officer and board of directors’ member on organizations including the Southern California Association of Governments, Independent Cities Association of Los Angeles County, National League of Cities and its National Black Caucus of Local Elected Officials, TransAfrica, Weingart Urban Center YMCA, Harbor Free Clinic, Pacifica Foundation, and the Coastal San Pedro Neighborhood Council.
Farrell is founder of the National Democratic Municipal Officials Conference of the Democratic National Committee, and represented it on the DNC executive committee. He was a Jesse Jackson delegate at the 1984 and 1988 Democratic National Conventions. He is a member of the Martin Luther King Jr. and San Pedro Democratic Clubs, and the Black American Political Association of California (BAPAC).
He earned a BA in Near Eastern Studies at UCLA, and attended the graduate school of journalism there. He has worked as reporter, writer and political editor of the Los Angeles Sentinel newspaper. He is an accredited member of the Public Relations Society of America (retired).
